By the year 2060, 80% of all marriages ended in divorce within the first 5 years. 10% of marriages went beyond 5 years only because the couples resorted to immoral methods to keep the passion alive such as open relationships and swinging parties. Only 10% of marriages lasted until death do you part.

The government thought that the idea of love was what was ruining marriage. Too many confused lust for love and once the lust faded, they couldn't stand each other. They decided that in order to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number of people, they had to take control. The government would dictate who would marry who. They created a system that based matches on personalities and personal preferences. There was no love in the equation, just who would get along. Every individual in the country is on file. They know you.

But with most edicts of power, it didn't stop at just dictating who you would marry. They took it upon themselves to outlaw what they thought destroyed the sanctity of marriage. These offenses will end in death if caught. Such as follows:
  • Abortion
  • Birth Control
  • Homosexuality
  • Polygamy
  • Alcohol
  • Narcotics
  • Tobacco
  • Premarital Sex (for females)
  • Divorce
Any instances of these crimes will result in execution.

The current setting is the year 2184. By now, all diseases have been wiped out. Orphanages are obsolete as all children are born into marriage.

As far as technology goes, it's not too much different than the world we live in now. There are no flying cars, but cars no longer rely on gasoline or even electricity. Cars have a battery cell that lasts 300,000 miles before having to be replaced.

Houses are a cookie-cutter design. One master bedroom and master bath and three smaller bedrooms with two baths. When they are built, they are already outfitted with linens, furniture, dishware, appliances etc etc. Like cars, they no longer use electricity or gas and use battery cells that are good for 100 years. Men do not receive a house until they are married. Prior to marriage, they still reside in the house their parents were given. If a man becomes widowed, he still resides in the house given to him in his first marriage and all subsequent marriages will be in that same house.

Now the thing to remember is that this is a patriarchal society. It's not quite misogynistic because the men don't hate women. They love women! They just think that the reason divorce was so prominent years ago was because of women. So they take as much power away from them as they can while still claiming that women have many rights.

Types of Characters

Husbands

All males born into this society are required to be husbands. They can be drafted into marriage at any point after the age of 23, provided they have had their year of sponsoring (see next post for explanation of sponsoring).

*Male characters need to be 23 or older or they cannot be drafted!

Wives

At the age of 6, all females are sent to boarding schools where they live, only returning home on the weekends and during holidays where they are under the supervision of their mother. These boarding schools teach girls how to be a perfect wife. Their classes include but are not limited to:

Cleaning
Cooking
Sewing
Beauty
Children
Gardening
Etiquette
Problem-Solving

In addition, they are taught basic school subjects but it is not the focus.

They are taught that they are not to love their husband, but to respect him. Love does not exist.

At the age of 17, they begin to learn about sex. At this point, they already know about reproduction, but this isn't about that. Sex is an important part of marriage. By keeping your husband happy in the bedroom, he won't need to look outside your marriage to have his needs satisfied.

The girls are taught how to seduce, how to arouse, and how to fake it. Sex is primarily meant for their husbands. It doesn't mean they can't feel pleasure, but it's not a guarantee. It is of utmost importance for your husband to believe that you are completely satisfied.

Some wives are married at the age of 18, but some may remain unmarried until the age of 21. It all depends on the wife and her extensive knowledge. Some need more schooling than others. At the age of 18, if they are not drafted, they return home to live until they are drafted while attending a finishing school on the weekends to keep their knowledge fresh. Women are matched up to their husband a year before they are married.

The last year of their schooling is dedicated to learning their husband. The government knows everything about him. They know his preferences and their goal is to select a wife who he will not be able to resist. The girls are taught how to cater to his desires.

Women are given some freedom but not without great restriction. At the age of 6, they are fitted with a bracelet that they will wear until they die. It tells the government where they are and can even sense if an unmarried woman is too close to a man. Saving her virtue for her husband is important and if she were not a virgin on her wedding night, it will result in death if her husband turns her in for it (which he should.)

After marriage, the bracelet is modified so that her husband now tracks her location. It no longer detects close male contact because it can not differentiate between her husband and another man (and she should be faithful anyway.) It also attaches to her vitals and is able to detect pregnancy. It does not alert the wife if it detects pregnancy, but she will find a letter in the mail soon after of scheduled doctors appointments.

Unmarried women are only allowed to wear skirts and dresses and high heeled shoes. After she is wed, she is allowed to wear pants and flat shoes.

Wives also do not work besides being a housewife.

*Female characters (that are not already widows) need to be at least 18 or they cannot be drafted. If they are older than 21 and you still want them to be drafted, they need to be a young widow with no children. She cannot be any older than 26 or she cannot be drafted.

Widows

Men can be married off to a wife at any point in their life. It is not uncommon for a husband to be elderly and marrying a young wife. Or sometimes husbands can be found guilty of treason and executed, leaving their wife a widow.

A widow can be as young as 18, depending on how short-lived her marriage was. Depending on her age, how long she was married, and if she's had children, she could be married again.

If a woman is widowed before the age of 26 and has not had any children, she will be married off again. When she is widowed at that young age, she goes back to the boarding school for a special refresher course. When a husband is selected for her, they are told that their wife is refurbished and they have the option to refuse her. Since refusing your drafted wife is often considered treason, no one ever does.

Widows who are older than 26 are automatically sterilized regardless of whether they've had their three children or not. They are required to sponsor young men. It becomes their job and the government pays them hefty sums for their loyalty. Widows will continue to sponsor young men until the age of 50, which is when they retire.

Some more prestigious widows will be faculty at the boarding school. They live there. The only other jobs widows will take is certified midwives and attendants at the government lingerie shops and nannies for widowed men at daycare facilities.

If a girl does so poorly in school that she will not make a good wife, she is either executed at a young age or sold into slavery to work in another country in sweat shops and factories.

What Is Sponsoring?

Because this is a patriarchal society, only females are expected to remain chaste and virginal for their wedding night. Men are sponsored between the ages of 18 and 23.

Sponsored in this time means that men experience sex before they are married. Men are sponsored by widows but there are strict rules. A relationship between a man and a widow is not allowed. It is purely meant to be educational, to learn what he likes and to be comfortable handling a woman. Widows may sponsor many young men in their lives. They retire from sponsoring at the age of 50.

Men are sponsored for an entire year. They can have multiple sponsors during the course of a year, but after their sponsorship is over they are not to have sexual relations again until their wedding night.

How do men get sponsored? When a woman becomes a widow, she is put into a registry. There are hotlines set up in each city and when a man is ready to be sponsored, he calls his local hotline. He is then given an appointment to meet with his sponsor. From then, they can schedule appointments in person. A man can have multiple sponsors, but never more than one at a time. If they want another sponsor, they call the hotline again.

Their first call to the hotline is registered and is the official start of their year.

About Having Children

The government also decided it was time to control population. They dictated that women are only allowed to have three children. After their third child, they are sterilized.

There is no real sense of parenting. Daughters are sent away at the age of 6 and will only see their family on the weekends and holidays. Sons go to school where they get a good education, but they are brought up knowing that they will be married off. Their father is more of an authority figure. Someone who is older and wiser than them. They are fathers and mothers, but there is often no love between them.

Since it is a patriarchal society, the father rules over everything. Should a wife become a widow with children, the children are sent to live with the deceased husband's parents. Without a husband, a wife has nothing. If a husband is widowed and has children, they remain with him. When he is remarried, he can father three more children with her and all of his children will consider his current wife "mother."

Breaking The Law

The government may outlaw many things, but that doesn't mean they don't still happen. Just like in real life, people still cheat, steal, and do drugs. However, such crimes come with a hefty price--death. Because of this, they must be committed in secret and you must cover your tracks well. Remember that there are people always around and that you are never safe.

Consequences Account

To keep up with the realism that this setting demands, we have a special account called 'Consequences.' At any time, that account may post in your thread regardless if it is private or not. Do not fear, however. It will not come in and say that now your characters are going to die. It will be a simple reminder that people are in the area. It might tell you that someone approaches the area and that's it. It might be a harmless passerby, but one person knowing your secret is one too many. As a result, your characters might jump apart or better hide their actions or they can ignore it.

Do not take this to mean that your characters can break the law forever and never get caught. The reason we eliminated the underground was because it was a playground for crime without any consequences. Do not take this as a threat because no one really wants to have to tell you that your characters have been caught and they can now be executed. That is a possibility, but we do not want to have to do that. We simply want you to play within the parameters of the game. Your characters can be caught. They are not invincible.

The Revolution

With any strict governing figure, there is an uprising. The Revolution is coming.

The Revolution is a group of citizens who are plotting to take down this government. It is made up of many kinds of people. Husbands, Widows, and some Wives. If you aren't fighting with the Revolution, you are part of the problem.

At this time, this is not a board-wide plot. If your character would like to advocate said revolution, it will have to be an individual plot that you orchestrate yourselves. But still remember that there can be consequences.

Living Arrangements

All housing is government owned. Everyone lives in cookie-cutter homes that the government builds and hands the keys out when a husband and wife get married.

Important Facts to Remember
  • Wives live at boarding schools and at home with their parents until their wedding day.
  • Husbands live with their parents until their wedding day. *
  • Husband and Wife move into a government housing development that is given to them on their wedding day.
  • When a woman becomes a widow, if she is younger than 26 and has no children, she goes back to the institution for a refresher course where she'll wait to be married again.
  • When a woman becomes a widow, if she is older than 26, she moves out of the three bedroom house and into an apartment building. If she has children, they are sent to live with her deceased husband's parents.**
  • If a man becomes a widow, he stays in the same government issued house and when he's remarried, they just continue to live in that same house.
When a couple's children are all married off, they move to a smaller one bedroom house.

*A man's parents live in the same kind of government housing. It is the same house that was given to them on their wedding day. So a man can be 35 and still living with mom and dad if he hasn't been married yet.
**Houses are reserved for complete families. A widowed husband can remain in a house because he will be married again. A widowed wife can never be married again.

Now the law only states that women cannot have more than three children. So technically if a man is married multiple times, he can have more. In that case, they can petition for a larger house.

All houses have the same plan though siding colors may vary from white to gray to navy and shades inbetween. They come with 4 bedrooms (one is a flex room that you can make into an office if you want two of your children to share a room) and 3 baths.

They are given two cars, one for the husband's use and one for the wive's use. The wive's car is meant to be the family car since she'll be the one carting them around. Now obviously, I can't find a picture of what an actual car will look like in the year 2184 so I'm going to pick out a 2010 model and we're just going to pretend.
